Crescendo is one in a series of designs that came into being during a recent visit with my 2 year old grandson. I don’t get to see him often so it was a real joy to spend nearly a month helping to care for him while his father traveled for work.

The first thing I noticed about this charming young man was that he much prefers singing over talking! He surrounds himself with music every waking moment and often has 4 different musical toys accompanying him while he senarades anyone who will listen. The music starts soft and low but builds in volume as each new toy is added.

Since knitting is my therapy, I couldn’s just stop during the visit so I had to work on projects that required little or no attention. I call this design Crescendo because, like his music, it starts as a gentle garter curve that rythmically grows into multiple matching curves but requires little attention. It begins with one spiral and additional spirals are added as you go using markers to help keep them separated. Each spiral uses the same 2 row repeat pattern. It can easily be modified by creating fewer spirals for a shawlette size or adding extra spirals as yarn allows. This sample was made using Lion Brand Mandala, 100% Acrylic yarn. (I had a 2 year old helping so wanted something sturdy and washable to begin with!)
