This cosy hat will keep you warm all through the winter. It’s knitted in the round to avoid seaming, and has a simple stranded colourwork design. The yarn is soft alpaca, which has a lovely fuzzy halo, and will definitely keep out chilly winds and rain. You could also substitute another 4ply wool or alpaca.

This hat is sized with around 5cm (2in) of negative ease. It can be worn as a beanie or as a slouchy hat, so choose the circumference and height that will suit the wearer and the way you want to wear it! However, the sizes roughly equate to age ranges, as follows.

Baby 40.5cm (16in) circumference 14.5cm (5.75in) height
Toddler 45.5cm (18in) circumference 16.5cm (6.5in) height
Child 50.5cm (20in) circumference 18.5cm (7.25in) height
Adult 56cm (22in) circumference 21cm (8.25in) height
Large Adult 61cm (24in) circumference 23.5cm (9.25in) height

You will need three colours of yarn, but only small amounts are needed, so this is an ideal project to use up odd balls in your stash.
