MATERIALS
• Braided cord
• 10 mm crochet hook
• Approx. 600 m (656 yd) of cord
The original rug was made with polyester braided cord weighing approximately 380 g per 100 m (3.8 g/m), or about 13.4 oz per 109 yd.
CHOOSING A CORD
You do not need to use the same cord brand, exact diameter, or a cord with a core.
The most important characteristic is the construction of the cord. Look for a BRAIDED cord rather than a soft twisted macramé cord. Twisted macramé cords behave differently when crocheted and will not produce the same structure and stitch definition.
Depending on the manufacturer and country, a suitable material may be sold as braided cord, polyester cord, crochet cord, or simply cord.
The diameter stated by the manufacturer is only a general reference. Different cords labeled with the same diameter can vary considerably in actual thickness and density.
A more useful reference is the weight of the cord. The original cord weighs approximately:
• 3.8 g per meter
• 380 g per 100 m
• 13.4 oz per 109 yd
Your substitute does not need to match this number exactly. A somewhat lighter or heavier braided cord can also be used.
Please keep in mind that changing the cord may affect the finished size, texture, and total amount of cord required.
The stated cord requirement of approximately 600 m (656 yd) is based on the original cord and should be treated as a reference when using a substitute.
