The crochet counterpart to my Utilitarian Faroese Shawl.

Not so very long ago on the mist-shrouded Faroe Islands, a hearty breed of women looked toward the cold northern sea, the grassy volcanoes at their backs. As they waited for their men-folk to return from harvesting the ocean’s bounty, they spun the fleece of their flocks and spent the long winters knitting a very special kind of shawl. Famous for their simplicity and practicality, these butterfly-shaped garments incorporated a clever gusset at the back that allowed them to stay in place as the women went about their work.

The virtues of the Faroese shawl are just as important for active women today. Their rustic good looks and their functional design work well with modern casual dress and an active lifestyle. This shawl will become as an essential part of your wardrobe as comfortable jeans and sweatshirts, but with a special style that will set you apart.

This pattern brings the Faroese shawl to crocheters. It features the same characteristic construction that makes wearing it so effortless. You’ll discover that making it is just as effortless. You may also find that the pattern becomes an addiction. As you make the first one, you will quickly realize how easy it to customize. Make a short one to wear as a kerchief to cover just your shoulders, and a long one to keep you cozy on the coldest nights. Use a luxury yarn with a bit of shine and substitute a lacy stitch pattern for the plain double crochet, and you will have a shawl that will take you to a night on the town. Edge it with fringe or a fancy border, add beads or even embroidery to make it your own unique and beautiful creation. Perhaps as you wear it, you will even feel the pull of sisterhood with the original creators of this very special shawl.
Pictured shawl is 77in x 28in/195.6 cm x 71.1 cm
