This pattern is for a small (about 10 pound) male dog. It is designed to fit a dog with a deep rib cage and very muscular chest in front. The pattern has deep armholes (open) and has had the front edges of the armholes elongated slightly for more ease across the chest area.

You should be familiar with how to use a Circular Sock Machine and with the terminology used in cranking.

The following settings were used to make the sweater pictured above. However, you should use the appropriate settings for the yarn & machine you are using!

  • Machine: Bumblebee with 90 cylinder (Ribber optional).
  • Tension: Turn tension 11 clicks to shorten stitch length starting from longest stitch OR the tension you need for your yarn.
  • Yarn: Fingering or sock yarn
  • Terminology: Waste Yarn = WY; Project Yarn = PY; Heel Spring = HS

START UP:

  1. Cast on with WY and crank 10 rows, stopping at 12 o’clock
  2. Raise the 6 o’clock needle PLUS 18 needles on each side (37 needles)
  3. Finish cranking row, clip WY yarn.

BACK FLAP:

  1. Join PY between first working/nonworking needle on left side, leaving a 20” tail.
  2. Crank back & forth for 40 - 60 rows with HS, hanging weights as needed. End at 9 o’clock.
  3. Hang hem. Add stem weight. Raise all needles out of work!

E-WRAP CAST ON:

  1. At 9 o’clock, using the 20” tail, loosely e-wrap front raised needles ending at 3 o’clock.
  2. Align yarn carrier with the first e-wrapped stitch at 9 o’clock. Engage HS.
  3. Lower e-wrapped needles, knit to 6 o’clock.
  4. Lower remaining needles and crank to 3 o’clock. Remove HS
  5. Knit 40 – 60 rows, stopping at 12 o’clock.

DEEP LEG OPENINGS:

  1. Raise center front needle PLUS 17 needles on each side (35 stitches)
  2. Crank 40 - 60 rows. Clip yarn and leave 8” tail
  3. Raise all needles and move yarn carrier to 6 o’clock. Lower previously unworked needles.
  4. Join yarn between worked/unworked needles at 3 o’clock, leave 8” tail
  5. Using HS, crank the # of rows in #2 above PLUS an additional 10% more rows. This adds ease across front chest.
  6. On last row stop at center back, lower all needles into work. Remove HS
  7. Crank 40 - 60 rows, stopping at 6 o’clock.

NECK:

  1. If you like, you can tighten or loosen tension 1 or 2 clicks before beginning.
  2. Set up preferred rib pattern (ribber or mock rib)
  3. Crank 30 - 45 rows, stopping at 6 o’clock
  4. Replace stitches on cylinder needles & crank 1 full row
  5. Cut PY, leaving very long tail for back stitch bind off.
  6. Add WY, crank 10 rows and remove from machine.

FINISHING:

  1. Work backstitch bind off around top of neck edge.
  2. Stitch left & right edge of flap
  3. Hide threads, etc.
