This was the featured MKAL for Mystery 220 (more or less) forum for April 2022.

Materials:

  • DK, Worsted, or Aran yarn, 200-300 yards (suggested: cotton, linen, hemp or blends with these as they are sturdy and hold up to a lot of use) Mine (the tan and pink) took 138 grams/300 yards
  • 4 DPNs in 2 sizes bigger than what you would normally use for your yarn weight
  • The same size Circular needle in 16 to 24”
  • 6 stitch markers
  • (optional) 8 to 10 unusual or colorful buttons or seashells with a hole in them

Suggested Needle sizes:

  • US7 (4mm) for DK, US9 (5.5mm) for Worsted, US 10-11 (6-6.5mm) for Aran
  • DPNs to begin, then a 16-24” circular needle for the body, DPNs again for the last clue. Gauge is not important to size.

And now for the answers you all need to know:

  • The size yarn you use will make a difference in project size, but it should still be usable even in a smaller yarn.
  • Any good sturdy yarn will do, but I suggest cotton, cotton blends, hemp/blends, linen/blends, or acrylic. I used an Aran-weight cotton that I recycled.
  • Any color will do, even wildly variegated. Mine was from a peachy sweater that I overdyed with tans and oranges. Go nuts.
  • You’re going to be surprised at how fast this knits up!

Some great uses for this bag:

  • Enough yarn for an afghan
  • a sweater project with all its components
  • bathing suit, towel, sunscreen, bottled water for the beach or lake.
  • diapers, change of clothes, and a nursing blanket (plus mom’s wallet)
  • all the produce you need at the fruit market
  • several days’ worth of laundry down to the washing machine
  • all the books to return to the library and schlep home with a whole new batch!
  • overnight bag for a teenager
