Meet the Dalal Slipover, a design that looks far more complicated than it actually is. The name means playful confidence in Arabic, and that’s exactly what this slipover is about. A bold mix of chunky and intricate cables, textured panels, and mirror-image symmetry that creates an impressively complex look, all from stitches that are surprisingly straightforward to work.
Each side of the slipover mirrors each other, but the cables are all different. Some are wide and chunky, others thin and detailed, with textured panels in between. The result is something that looks like it took months of planning but actually just flows from the needles once you get going. You will need to be comfortable reading charts, but the cables themselves are easy.
The slipover is worked seamlessly from the top down featuring an European shoulder and crewneck that you can adjust to your preference, whether you want it sitting close to the neck or lower for a more relaxed look. Worked at a large gauge, the fabric is light and airy, perfect for layering in transitional weather, and it knits up quickly.

Notions: Stitch markers, locking markers, row counter, tape measure, stitch holders or waste yarn, tapestry needle, cable needle.
Techniques used: Lifted increases, cable knitting, Backwards loop cast-on, knitting in the round.
Construction notes: The slipover is worked seamlessly from the top down. It starts by casting on stitches for the back neckline and shaping the shoulders using lifted increases.
It’s then worked flat down to the underarms, adding the armhole shaping increases along the way.
Stitches are then picked up along the back shoulders to create the front shoulders, working each side separately with increases to shape the front neckline and finally joining both fronts to complete the neckline and working flat down to the underarm when the back and front are joined to work in the round down to desired length, finishing with a 2x2 rib.
The collar is added by picking up stitches along the neckline and working 2x2 rib in the round to the desired height.
Other Notes: In this pattern, the smaller 2x2 cables are not mirrored. This is a deliberate choice to keep the instructions straightforward and the knitting rhythm flowing, and the difference is not that noticeable in the finished object. That said, if you’re comfortable with cables and prefer to mirror the crossings on each side of the centre, go for it. It won’t affect the stitch count or construction in any way, so feel free to make it your own.
