Dandelion has arrived! Celebrate our newest release with 30% off all Wool & Pine colorwork patterns through Monday, October 12th on Ravelry and woolandpine.com. No code needed, discount applied automatically at checkout.

Dandelion is a DK-weight sweater with easy stockinette and a field of dandelions blooming around the hem. Optional embroidery adds texture to the flower heads, giving you one more way to make it your own. We include a step-by-step video tutorial, so no embroidery experience is needed!

Worked seamlessly from the top down using contiguous construction, the shoulders and sleeve caps are shaped as you knit for the tailored fit of a set-in sleeve without any seaming. Choose short or long sleeves, adjust the body length, and use leftover DK hiding in your stash for the colorwork.

Design Details

Dandelion has a simple tailored silhouette designed for 2–8” of positive ease, giving you plenty of room to play with the finished look.

Keep the body shorter with less ease for a closer fit, or add length and more ease for a relaxed sweater. The body length is easily adjusted by changing where you begin the dandelion colorwork.

Construction Overview

Dandelion is worked seamlessly from the top down using contiguous construction. If contiguous is new to you, don’t let the name scare you! It’s simply a method of increasing across the shoulders and sleeve caps as you knit, creating the tailored fit of a set-in sleeve without knitting separate pieces or sewing seams.

You’ll begin by working the yoke flat while shaping the shoulders, sleeves, and front and back necklines. The sweater is then joined in the round and the sleeve stitches are placed on hold.

From there, it’s simple stockinette in the round until you reach the dandelion colorwork, followed by a 2x2 ribbed hem. The colorwork includes a few longer floats, and we’ve included a video tutorial for Ladderback Jacquard if you’d like to try it. It’s completely optional though, and traditional float catching works beautifully too! The sleeves are worked in the round in your choice of short or long length, and the neckline is finished with a picked-up 2x2 ribbed collar.

Yarn Notes

Dandelion was designed in Yarn Nouveau Merino DK, a 100% superwash merino with a smooth hand, beautiful stitch definition, and rich depth of color.

The dandelions are also a great excuse to dig through your stash. Each contrast color uses a relatively small amount of yarn, so leftover DK from previous projects works beautifully. Fingering-weight yarn held double can be used too.

Our samples combine Yarn Nouveau Merino DK with a few DK leftovers for the colorwork. Mix colors and yarns you already have or plan a palette from scratch, both work here.

Needles & Gauge

  • US 7 (4.5 mm) 16–40” circular needles
  • US 6 (4 mm) needles for ribbing

20 sts x 26 rows in stockinette = 4” x 4”

Wet blocked

We recommend swatching both stockinette and colorwork. Colorwork gauge can tighten up, so change needle size if needed to maintain the same gauge throughout.
