These mittens were a special design for my dear friend named Dan, and he just happens to be a musician - hence the notes pattern and the name of the mittens! I had so much fun designing these mittens!

These convertible mittens are unique in that they have flippable thumb shells, and in that they do not have an obvious crease across the back of the hand where the mitten shell attaches to the glove part of the mitten. In this pattern, I have included a technique that leaves a much more subtle “pick-up” crease, allowing for continuity in the notes pattern.

With this pattern, you will receive detailed written instructions for adult sizes L, M, S and XS/youth, along with 9 charts - left and right hand charts in each size, and a template that includes all of the notes used (in case you want to change up the pattern). You will also be provided with a variety of options, including beginner to advanced options and sizing customization options, and links to video tutorials for certain techniques used. Even if you do not want to use the notes pattern and just want to use a solid color or a striping pattern, this is a great pattern to use for convertible mittens. They knit up fairly quickly, due to the use of a worsted - dk weight yarn. (See next paragraph.)

I made these with 100% merino wool, and needed 150 g of the main color, and 50 g of the contrast color in worsted weight. I tend to knit tightly, so if you are a loose knitter, you may want to use a dk or sport weight yarn.

As always, I am committed to promptly responding to your questions about this, or any other of my patterns. I am reachable through Ravelry, and also my personal email, which is provided in this pattern. (My personal email will likely get you a faster response.) Thank you for looking, and happy knitting!
