Dead Pixels is a colorwork cowl. It is worked as a tube, then the cast on is sewn to the bind off to create a double-thick fabric circle.

This cowl can be made using any 2 or more contrasting colors of fingering weight yarn. You can also use scraps of many different colors.

The key to creating the “dead pixels” look is to choose yarns that share some, but not all, of the same colors. For example: a solid blue yarn combined with a variegated yarn containing that same blue, mixed with other colors. Or two multi colored skeins that both have some natural white still showing. The key is to have some parts that match, and some parts that don’t.

As you knit, the pattern will be visible when the different parts of the yarns touch. The pattern will disappear when the similar parts of the yarns touch.
