Design Details

Deep Winter Hat is worked in the round from the brim to the crown. It begins with a twisted ribbing that hugs the forehead comfortably, then moves into the cable pattern worked from either a chart or written instructions.

The crown decreases flow naturally out of the cable pattern, and the hat can be worn folded for a snug fit or unfolded for a more relaxed look.

Pattern Highlights

  • One skein project that actually uses a full DK skein
  • Stretchy fit across five sizes for reliable gift knitting
  • Cables create interest
  • Written and charted instructions included

Construction Overview

The hat is knit seamlessly in the round from brim to crown. After the twisted ribbing, the cable pattern is worked continuously up the body. Decreases are integrated into the cable pattern and the crown is closed by threading yarn through the remaining stitches.

No seaming is required and finishing is minimal.

Yarn Notes

Our sample was knit in The Farmer’s Daughter Fibers Bear Paw DK, a 60% superwash merino, 20% silk, and 20% yak blend that gives beautiful stitch definition and softness against the skin.

DK yarns with good structure really shine here. Plied yarns and tonals highlight the cables especially well, while very busy speckles can soften the texture. Most standard 100g DK skeins will comfortably complete the hat, making it a great use for a single special skein from your stash.
