A top down, twisted rib and slip stitch knit sweater by Corrado Lark

The Backstory:

Up until now, this has never happened in my design inspiration. But I was watching “Insecure” and Issa Rae had on this sweater or t-shirt that had a really cool triangular-optical illusional-y design, and while I never went back to the episode, that night I drew out what I remembered of the pattern. I knew I had to work it into a sweater of my own and was too inspired to just let it go!

I also had the idea for a sweater that I’d dedicate to my brother, Devon, who is in Connecticut living near my parents with his awesome girlfriend. When he and I were kids, computers were just becoming something that everyone had in the houses. I remember having computer class in intermediate school (like 4th-5th grade) with these large screens and DOS. The one at home I mainly used for Myst and a game I got free from a box of Chex. I remember shooting different Chex Mix foods at Chex-like aliens… it was wild.

Anyway, my brother is younger than me and when he was learning to type on the computer, he would type his “n”s as “p”s. Don’t know why, I think he just thought it was funny. So in dedication to that memory, “Devop” was the clear title for the design.

The Needs:

Needles:

  • US 4, smallest needle used for ribbing
  • US 6, middle sized needle used for stockinette (and gauge)
  • US 7, large size needle used for colorwork

The design uses two different types of yarn:

  • Croft DK (246yd/100g each), 100% SW Blue Faced Leicester
  • Castle Suri (328yd/50g each), 74% Baby Alpaca/ 26% silk
  • Color A: 3 (3, 3, 4, 4) (4, 4, 4, 5) (5, 5, 6, 6) skeins of Croft DK in the “Cobblestone” colorway, a medium gray in the original sample.
  • Color B: 1 (1, 1, 1, 1) (1, 1, 1, 1) (1, 2, 2, 2) skeins of Croft DK in the “Majesty Navy” colorway, a navy blue in the original sample.
  • Color C: 1 (1, 1, 1, 1) (1, 1, 1, 1) (1, 2, 2, 2) skeins of Croft DK in the “Gilded” colorway, a golden yellow in the original sample.
  • Color D: 1 (1, 1, 1, 1) (1, 1, 1, 1) (1, 2, 2, 2) skeins of Castle Suri in the “Gilded” colorway, the same as Color C, which makes the color glow amongst the others.
  • Optional: If you wish to have a solid colored ribbing, add an extra skein of any A-C skein and replace the ribbing colors with that color (if you don’t want a bright stripe on your chest like I did).

  • 18 stitches and 27 rows per 4” (10cm) blocked stockinette in the round.

  • Your waist measurement is 1” smaller than your chest measurement. There’s no additional shaping after that so the hip measurement is the same as the waist.
