Your design is a roll of the dice! Twenty Fair Isle motifs, paired with twenty contrasting colors, ensure that every cowl will be truly unique.

The colorwork in this pattern is designed to be fairly beginner-friendly, featuring short floats and a construction that keeps all floats and yarn ends contained within the rounded cowl. With no exposed wrong side, there’s no traditional “back” to worry about.

The Dexterity challenge comes in choosing how to shape your cowl/scarf. You have two construction options:

The Long Way: Knit a simple tube to your desired scarf length, then sew the ends closed after binding off. This is the longer but simpler option, requiring no provisional cast-on or grafting techniques.

The Short Way: Create a continuous cowl by joining the ends together. This option produces a shorter, seamless cowl, but requires a provisional cast-on and grafting, making it the more technically challenging approach.

This pattern is designed to be flexible when it comes to yarn selection. There is no strict gauge requirement, and you can knit your cowl to whatever length you desire.

The most important considerations are yarn weight and suitability for colorwork. Choose a single yarn weight throughout the project. I used sock weight, but sport weight or even DK weight can work well depending on your preferences. (You may want to reduce the number of stitches cast on if you increase the weight of the yarn)

For the best results, select a yarn that is suitable for Fair Isle knitting: avoid heavily textured yarns, novelty yarns, and other fibers that might obscure the colorwork techniques.

I originally designed this pattern as a stash buster for sock-weight mini skeins, and I thoroughly enjoyed the process! While the pattern is designed around 21 total colors (1 MC and 20 AC), you don’t need to use that many. You can work with as few as two colors and still enjoy the randomness and variety of the charted motifs.

Whether you use a full spectrum of colors, or just a couple of favorites, the combination of motifs and color choices ensure that your cowl will be uniquely yours.

#2.75mm/US2 15-inch/38cm circular needle (if using sock weight, adjust as needed for heavier weights of yarn.

For grafting at the end of the project, it is highly recommended to have a second circular needle of the same size, however it is possible to complete it with DPNS (if you have enough stitch holders/savers).

Gauge
Worked in the round:
~8 stitches per inch and per row.
Gauge is not particularly important for this project, however if your gauge is much larger than that, you would likely wish to remove stitches from the cast on (reduce by multiples of 12).

Size Information
Design your cowl/scarf to the length that you desire. Be sure that your cowl is able to fit over your head (for most people having at least 25 inches around is enough).
If you have a similar gauge as I do, your finished width of your cowl will be approximately 9 inches.
