This 12-inch reversible square uses the double-ended Tunisian technique worked flat (also known as crohook or cro-knit).

Double-ended Tunisian fabric is delightful because it lies flat and looks attractive on both sides. You can see a video of the drape and texture of the fabric in this video.

The pattern has written instructions and includes a photo-tutorial for the two special stitches used. A left-handed photo-tutorial has been added on 08.07.2021 on request.
You can see a simple video on the special stitches used here.

“Dhurrie” means a handwoven cotton rug or floor covering of Indian origin.

My inspiration comes from the striped cotton dhurries of my childhood that I remember as having vivid and cheerful bands of color. (See an example on my project page.) A contemporary design element that I wanted to incorporate was texture. Modern-day handloom bedspreads that we see in craft exhibitions here often have stripes of color with a slightly raised texture – these linear ridges are very tactile and comforting under fingers and feet! The stripes on this square look and feel like ridged louvers - very touch-worthy.

Have fun and play with this design!

Make enough squares for your blanket and join them in any way you like to make an interesting and reversible fabric. A few options:

  • Use the same side of all your squares for one side of the blanket (the blanket will have different predominant colors on either side).
  • Alternate RS and WS of the squares on the same side of the blanket.
  • Place one square upright and turn the adjoining square sideways (either all RS or WS, or else a combination of RS and WS squares – your choice!).
  • Make a central “motif” for the blanket using squares of predominantly one color and surround it with squares in another color.

Level of difficulty: Advanced beginner (knowledge of basics of Tunisian crochet is needed)

Yarn: Worsted weight yarn in two colors A and B. Yardage needed : A: 75 yds/69 m, B 50 yds/46 m.
For the square in the photos, I used Yes Papa 8 Ply Cake Yarn (80% cotton, 20% acrylic; 328 yds/300 m/150 gm skein): YPC012 Dark gray (A) and YPC011 Pink (B). Online yarn store: yespapahandmade.com

Hooks & Notions: US size-11, 8mm double-ended Tunisian crochet hook (or size needed to achieve gauge), yarn needle, stitch markers (optional)

Size: 12 inches (30.5 cm) square after blocking

Gauge: 12 sts and 16 rows in body pattern = 4”
