Diagonal Braid Cowl
This my second original design pattern, and I’m also making this one free as my gift to you.
I made several of the Diagonal Braid Dishcloths (by Louise Patterson) and fell in love with this stitch pattern and thought it would make a lovely cowl. All I had to do is find a pattern on Ravelry, right? But after an exhaustive search which turned up nothing, I decided to translate the flat dishcloth pattern into one that can be worked in the round.
I’m thrill with this result. The pink example was my first test using some yarn I bought on clearance at Joann’s – The Hook Nook Small Stuff – it’s acrylic in a DK weight. The red cowl was also knit in DK cotton/acrylic blend, Sun City by Schachenmayr, but it’s a tighter twist, almost a sport weight. I also tried starting one using a variegated yarn, but the beautiful stitch pattern got lost in the color and I frogged it, so I do recommend using solid colors or maybe a tonal or lightly speckled colorway.
Gauge is unimportant, and it’s really up to you what weight yarn you use and what size you make. My next one will be in a fingering and double loop and I’ll post it when I get it finished. It would also look great in a bulky weight for winter.
Measured flat, they are both right around 15”. The pink one is 6” deep and the red cotton blend is 4” deep – perfect for just a little summer color.
Once you get the rhythm of the pattern, it’s easy to memorize.
Enjoy and please post a picture of your finished objects.
