This two-color crescent-shaped shawl uses the mosaic lace knitting technique developed by Barbara Benson. Lacy diamond motifs alternate with solid twisted-stitch diamonds in an all-over stitch pattern.
You can see a video of the shawl below.

Size is adjustable; instructions are given in the pattern.

If you’re familiar with mosaic knitting and basic lace knitting, this will be a breeze. In mosaic lace knitting, both mosaic and lace techniques are used in the same row. This pattern is a perfect intro to the technique and includes an explanation of the stitches, with instructions for a practice swatch.

Shaping and lace patterning occur only on right side rows, so it’s a fairly relaxing knit.
The pattern is both fully written and charted, and has been tech edited and tested.

Skill level: Intermediate. Familiarity with mosaic and basic lace knitting.

Yarn: Fingering weight yarn, about 440 yds/402 m each of main color (MC) and contrast color (CC). Choose solid or tonal colors with good contrast.

For the peach/gray shawl in the photo, I used Sunrays Creations Vilasa SS (Skinny Singles); 100% silk; 440 yds/402 m/100 g in colors Main Color (MC) Peach Melba and Contrast Color (CC) Granite; one skein each. This yarn is now discontinued.
Actual yardage used: MC 89.5g (394 yds/360 m); CC 99g (436 yds/398 m); MC is peach and CC is gray. Note that practically the whole skein of CC was used; you may wish to have more than one skein on hand to allow for differences in gauge.

Needles & notions: 3.25mm (US 3) and 3.5mm (US 4) circular needles (32” length or longer); locking and ring stitch markers, tapestry needle, 227 6/0 seed beads (optional), crochet hook or needle and thread for beading

Gauge: 12 sts (measured on Row 1 of Chart 1) and 24 rows (1 patt rep) = 4”(10 cm) in body pattern with 3.25mm needles, after blocking. 1 patt rep = 4” (10 cm) wide and 4.75” (12 cm) high, after blocking.

Finished size: 88” (224 cm) along upper edge, 164” (417 cm) along lower edge, 23” (58 cm) height at center.
Note that this pure silk shawl expanded significantly during blocking; if you use another fiber, your gauge and finished size will differ. My testers used various other fibers.

Many thanks to my wonderful testers!

A special mention of the talented Dorothy artdoro who very cleverly modified the border to get diamonds of contrasting color!

What testers had to say:

  • I enjoyed the knitting of this shawl, it’s a great pattern and I’m glad it’s not yet “another triangle” shape.
  • It’s such a beautiful pattern and looks so good in all versions.
  • I loved knitting this, so I think I’ll have to make another.
  • I am really thrilled at the way its looking.
  • I normally prefer to knit from charts, but, having color coding (as in the pattern) would entice me to use written instructions.

Many thanks to Barbara Benson vox8 for the inspiration and for sharing her ingenious technique with us!
