Winter is coming, so you’ll need some warm mittens. These ones, knit in the round with stranded colourwork, will help keep your hands warm in northern winters.

Inspired by the words and crest of house Stark from George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire/HBO’s Game of Thrones, these mittens feature a direwolf symbol on the back of the hand and a storm of swords and snowflakes on the palm.

The pattern provides instructions for mittens to fit an adult male’s hands, or a woman’s larger hands. They fit my hands (9 cm across at the knuckles, 19 cm from the top of my wrist to the tip of my middle finger) with a bit of room.

The direwolf sigil is 26 by 38 stitches. Feel free to plug him in to your favourite mitten pattern, or use him for other Stark-inspired items! He’d also look good done in intarsia, if you prefer knitting flat (take out the lighter grey flecks for a more solid look!).
For a fabulously detailed direwolf using way more stitches than will fit on a mitten, see Jessica Halleck’s lovely chart.

This pattern is intended for personal use only. Feel free to share it or adapt it, but please do not sell items made from it.

If you have any questions or technical comments, I’d be happy to hear them. This is my first pattern and is adapted from the notes I took while knitting, so it may not be 100% accurate.

Note that the gauge I’ve listed is a ROUGH estimate. I gifted the originals, so can no longer make any measurements.
