A slightly modified take on the traditional Danish djævlehue (“devil’s cap”), using wrap-and-turn short rows for the crown shaping instead of seaming. A single row of eyelets along the bottom edge of the hat adds a subtle hint of lace, perfect to frame that precious little face.

The hat is worked sideways from the center back, increasing and decreasing to shape the traditional djævlehue edge. To finish, the cast on edge is sewn together with the bind off edge. Finally, braided cords can be added to make sure the hat fits snugly and stays in place.

Yarn: Fingering weight yarn, approximately 400 m / 440 yards per 100g. Optional, for ties: 6x 60 cm / 24 inch lengths of DK weight yarn in the same color as the working yarn.

Needles: 2,5 mm / US 1.5 straight or circular needles (40 cm / 16 inches or longer).

Other: Waste yarn in the same weight if doing a provisional cast on, tapestry needle for weaving in ends.

Gauge: Sample uses gauge of 28 sts & 59 rows to 10 cm / 4 inches in garter stitch.
