The DK Compass Crew Sweater is the crew neck and DK weight version of my best selling Compass design line! It is inspired by the lines of a compass, with 4 raised lines down the front, back and both sleeves mimicking the North, East, South and West compass points, and the raglan seams mimicking the North West, South West, South East, North East lines. It has a crew neck with short row shaping, and is worked top down with compound raglan shaping (increases concentrated at the beginning and end of the raglan section), as well as some additional increases worked in the body to increase to the full bust measurement. The sleeves and bottom edge have a 1x1 ribbed hem. The sweater is designed to fall to a slightly cropped level. The pattern has options for waist shaping if desired, and adding extra length.

Note: The sizes reflect the FINISHED bust measurements in inches / cm of the sweater, and listed below you can see the recommended actual bust range for each size. The sweater is designed for 2-6 inches / 5-15 cm of positive ease. To determine the size you wish to knit, measure your bust and add 2-6 inches / 5-15 cm to find the closest size. If you have a large difference between upper and full bust, you may wish to choose size based on upper bust, as the additional increases to the full bust measurement are easily adjustable. My sample is knit with about 2 inches / 5 cm of positive ease (Size 3 on a 36 inch / 90 cm bust and 30 inch / 75 cm waist).

Needles recommended:
4.5 mm / US 7 / UK 7 (or size needed to obtain gauge) - main body
4 mm / US 6 / UK 8 (or one size down from the main needle) - ribbing
Cord length to match your bust measurement as well as 9-16 inch / 22.5-40 cm cord for the sleeves (or DPNs or 32-40 inch / 80-100 cm cord for the magic loop method).

Gauge:
Using 4.5 mm / US 7 / UK 7 (body) needles and working in stockinette in the round.

4 x 4 inch / 10 x 10 cm = 19 sts x 28 rows/rounds

Yarn recommended:
Any DK (3) weight yarn, or a Fingering + Lace combo, that you can match gauge with.
Sample is knit using Treehouse Knits Dove DK (246 yds/100g) in the colourway I Live in Two Worlds.

Yardage required:

Additional yardage per extra inch of length:
22 (25, 28, 31)(34, 37, 39){42, 45, 48, 51} yds / 20 (23, 26, 28)(31, 34, 36){39, 41, 44, 47} meters

  • If you wish to do a folded collar instead of the regular collar, you’ll need an additional 20-30 yds / 18-28 m of yarn.
  • If you choose to knit your sweater using fingering and suri/mohair/truffula cashmere, you will need the above yardage for EACH of the fingering and lace weight fluff.

Note: Yardage is an approximation and is calculated using the recommended length (see schematics on page 5-6) and no waist shaping. Allow for extra yardage if choosing to do length modification. The yardage can vary depending on your gauge and knitting, so I always recommend buying extra in case you require more yardage.
