Doctor Who Scarf Blanket
Notes
A few years ago, my dad asked me to make him the Fourth Doctor’s scarf. It was a fun but epic ordeal, and I figured I would never attempt it again.
But I got to looking at the patterns and the yardage—and it turns out that if you split the the Series 16 scarf, frankensteined together from the original Hero scarf and its stunt duplicate, into four segments, you get something that is about four feet wide and six feet long. Which is…a blanket.
Also included are instructions for making a similar throw from just the Hero scarf pattern. For this, I simply doubled the row counts, then divided them into four parts.
Tips
For construction, you have two options: knit four separate strips and sew them together; or, after binding off one strip, use the last stitch to start casting on for the next strip and slip-join the edges as you go. Exact row alignment is less important if you’re sewing.
Charts are included in rows and inches for both s12 and s16 versions. Yarn estimates are given for DK, worsted, and bulky weight yarn. Obviously, needles and gauge vary depending on the yarn you choose.
BLOCK IT. When I finished knitting, my blanket was basically a square. After wet-blocking, it covered a queen-sized bed.
If you want tassels, this calls for NINTEY-SIX, so make sure you have a lot of dedication and extra yarn.
NB:
I have only actually knit the worsted version of the s16 scarf/blanket. Everything else is only theory, especially the bulky yarn numbers, so be generous when buying yarn. If I’m way off, let me know and I’ll update the pattern.
