Dog Days is a series of small knitting projects, ideal for good boys (and meant for fallible humans, too).

While you can put it on a tolerant dog who never mistakes fabric for food, Dog Days 1 is in fact designed and sized to fit adult humans as a headscarf or as a cowl. It’s a small half-circle kerchief that converts into either one, and can be styled in interesting ways (especially if you use the second option for button placement).

You can knit it in wool for the cooler weather coming up--as a small project, it won’t bog you down in a sweater’s worth of wool as you work--or choose a cotton-linen blend for wear year-round.

The current samples are shown in a handspun wool blend (the blue-grey gradient) and Malabrigo Yarns Rastita in Glitter (the grey-yellow). Gauge is fairly important (too small, and it won’t be wearable), and blocking is essential to achieve the good half-circle shape.

Gauge is 14 sts and 28 rows in 4” of blocked stockinette. Use the needles you need to knit at gauge.

You’ll need:
-about 150 yards of fingering to sport yarn
-a 24” (or longer) US5-6/3.75-4.0mm circular needle
-3 or 4 7/8” buttons
Optional: linen or cotton embroidery thread for sewing on buttons and/or constructing the optional button brooch.

This pattern includes a photo tutorial for a simple but effective button brooch!
