Fingerless mitts worked in 2-color stranded colorwork. The hand pattern grows out of the thumb gusset, with hand and thumb separated by a contrasting slip stitch column. For a subtle (and optional) design feature, the dominant color of the stranded colorwork is switched between hand and thumb patterns, allowing the opposing colors to ‘pop’ in the two sections.

Pattern uses both written instructions and charts; the hand colorwork is only charted. (Let me know if you would like written instructions for the colorwork, and I can work on that for a future revision.) Difficulty-wise, this pattern should be appropriate for most intermediate to advanced knitters comfortable with working charted colorwork.

Gauge:
26 stitches by 29.5 rows per 4 in / 10 cm in stranded stockinette (this will be a tighter gauge than the same yarn and needle will yield for regular stockinette or garter stitch)

Needles:

• US size 4 / 3.5 mm (or size needed to make gauge) in whatever style you prefer for small-circumference knitting in the round. I like using a 24” circular needle with magic loop, but tastes will vary.

• US size 3 / 3.25 mm (or 1 or 2 sizes smaller than your main needle, for a tighter gauge on ribbing) in whatever style you prefer for small-circumference knitting in the round.

Materials:

• Approximately 175 - 210 yards / 160 - 193 meters worsted weight yarn in Main Color (smaller size may require less; yardage will vary between knitters, but I recommend erring on the high side)
• Approximately 100 - 175 yards / 90 - 160 meters worsted weight yarn in Contrast Color (smaller size may require less; yardage will vary between knitters, but I recommend erring on the high side)
• Stitch markers (at least 2)
• Stitch holder (large enough to hold 15 - 19 stitches)
• Yarn needle

Sizes:
There are two available sizes, which are listed as small / medium, and medium / large.
With the supplied gauge, the finished mitts are designed to fit the following palm circumferences, measured just above the thumb:

• Small / Medium: 7.25 inches / 18.5 centimeters
• Medium / Large: 8.5 inches / 21.5 centimeters

You could adjust sizing slightly by adding or subtracting 2 (or a multiple of 2) stitches to the palm and/or thumb charts (adjusting pattern numbers accordingly), but I would recommend first trying to adjust gauge with a yarn that’s slightly thicker/denser (for larger mitts), or finer/looser-spun (for smaller mitts) and following the pattern as written.

PDF Formatting:
The written pattern is black text on a white page, in size 11 sans serif font (Noto Sans, similar in size to Arial and larger than Calibri or Times New Roman), with no italics. Images have alt text, but feedback on these would be appreciated.
