You can use any bulky yarn or even 2 strands of worsted weight yarn.

Original chain can be lengthened or shortened to your preference by adding or reducing the chain stitches.

Keep in mind that too much of a reduction in original chain count will limit the ability to wrap the scarf for a double loop.
