Down the Middle was the pattern for the October 2022 MKAL of the Fingerless Glove Fanatics, with 5 clues published between October 1st and October 26th.

A note on construction: This design is unusual in that it is worked in separate parts (from the fingers down and from the cuff up) towards the middle. The join, featuring a lateral braid and a 3-needle bind-off, forms a decorative wristband that can be worked in one or two contrasting colours, and is optionally adorned with a button.
It is possible to replace the lace cuff and wristband with a plain ribbed cuff, which allows you to work the entire mitt top-down (detailed instructions not included; essentially, work the hand part to the desired length and then continue with ribbing, disregarding the paragraphs about cuff and wristband).

Sizing: Choose fingering to light sport-weight yarn for a ladies’ size M (hand circumference, unstretched: 17 cm/6.75”). A table is included to help you find the right gauge for your desired measurements.

Yarn and Notions

  • 165–200 m/181–219 yards of MC
  • Approximately 10 m/11 yards of CC (it is possible to replace MC with a second CC for the wristband; this will require less than 10 m/11 yards of CC2).
  • 2.75 mm (US size 2) needles for working in the round over a small circumference (or size to obtain the desired gauge). An extra pair of needles of the same size (or one size smaller) is required to set aside live stitches. Depending on your tension, you may also wish to use smaller needles for the last few rounds.
  • Optional: 2 decorative buttons and/or 48 seed beads that can be threaded onto your chosen yarn
  • A length of scrap yarn
  • Several stitch markers, two of them locking markers
  • Darning needle
  • A crochet hook of the same size as your knitting needles helps you finishing the lateral braid and 3-needle bind-off.

You will find 2 PDF files in your library: The file with the name name Down-the-Middle_2022-11 is the final version (complete with photos), which I would recommend to use. For knitters who have taken part in the MKAL, the version with separate clues is still available for reference.
