Dragon Scales Blanket
This isn’t your grandmother’s Afghan - it’s a textured masterpiece that’ll have everyone who walks into your room running their hands over it. The crocodile stitch creates hundreds of overlapping scales that catch the light differently depending on where you’re standing, and the finished blanket has serious weight and drape. It’s the kind of piece that makes people ask “where did you buy that?” and then refuse to believe you made it yourself.
The Details:
This pattern creates a queen-size blanket measuring approximately 90” x 90” - big enough to cover your bed with a little overhang, or to wrap yourself up completely on the couch.
What You’ll Need:
27-30 skeins of Big Twist Value yarn (170 yards each) OR 15-17 skeins of Big Twist Classic (312 yards each) OR 24-26 skeins of Caron One Pound in Peacock approximately 4,500-5,000 yards total
6mm (US J-10) crochet hook
Scissors
Yarn needle for weaving in ends
Patience (THIS STITCH EAT YARN AND TIME! But the result is worth every hour)
Important: Buy all your yarn from the same dye lot. The crocodile stitch is forgiving, but you don’t want obvious color shifts halfway through.
Gauge: 11 stitches and 6 rows = 4” in crocodile stitch (measured on foundation row)
Skill Level: Advanced Beginner/Intermediate - the stitch itself isn’t complicated, but the scale of this project and the yarn management requires some experience.
