If you’ve seen my On the Wings of a Dragonfly Shawl, you’ll probably recognise the dragonfly motif. This time though, I decided to look at it from a completely different angle.

Instead of working the dragonflies so they soar upwards, I wondered what would happen if I turned the whole concept on its head.

The result is Dragonfly Freefall.

By introducing a valley into the centre of the shawl, the dragonflies are transformed. As the shawl is worn, they appear to launch from the wearer’s shoulders before cascading down towards the ground on either side. It creates a completely different visual effect and gives the shawl a wonderful sense of movement.

I love that the same dragonfly motif can tell two very different stories. While On the Wings of a Dragonfly celebrates dragonflies taking flight, Dragonfly Freefall captures that magical moment as they sweep earthwards, creating a design that feels both familiar and entirely new.

Crocheted in the beautiful colour-changing shades of Scheepjes Whirl, the colours flow naturally through the dragonflies, making each one stand out as the shawl grows. The generous size makes it perfect for wrapping around your shoulders on cooler days or simply wearing as a statement piece that is sure to attract attention.
