This pattern as written makes a dreidel about six inches tall that can actually spin! You’ll need less than one skein of Hometown USA, and some scraps of worsted weight yarn in a contrasting color to do the embroidery.

The entire dreidel is made with only single crochet (including sc increases, sc decreases, BLO sc, and back post sc), plus a few chain stitches.

You could try making it in a different weight yarn as long as you use a hook that matches the yarn, but I don’t know if it will spin.
