There’s not an easy way to get to Drummond Island. It’s a large island in the northern part of Lake Huron, which is actually closer to Canada than it is to the mainland of Michigan. In spite of the winding trip you’ll need to take to get there, the simple life on the island is unmatched. If you’re looking for a wild social life, look elsewhere, but wildlife and natural beauty, Drummond Island has a plenty.

At first glance this pattern looks like a busy pattern intended for advanced knitters, but a closer look at Drummond Island will put you on a simple path to playing with color. The chart will guide you, but you’ll soon find yourself lost in the rhythm of the design. Every so often, a “rest” row of a single color will remind you that knitting isn’t about the destination, but about the journey…and maybe a little about playing with colors.

Drummond Island is sized for infants through adults, and includes a cozy cowl making it perfect for gift knitting and using up bits of color that may be languishing in your basket of leftovers. Knit it in fall colors, primaries, or neutrals and surprise yourself at how much fun it is to color with yarn.
