The Duggari cowl is worked in the same stitch as the sailors-of-the-past style Duggari sweater (our most popular pattern). The stitch is simple and quickly learned, and it gives the fabric a texture that keeps the knitting interesting.

Two lengths are given: short, so it stands at the neck, or longer so it folds down into a turn-up.

How it is worked
Worked in the round from the rib, then divided into front and back sections worked flat in the texture pattern. Nothing to seam at the end. An Italian tubular cast-on gives a soft, elastic edge, though it is not required.

Needles and notions

• 3 mm US 2½ and 4 mm US 6 double-pointed needles or a short circular, or the size that gives you the right gauge
• Stitch markers, including a beginning-of-round marker
• Scrap yarn or a stitch holder for the front stitches
• Darning needle, measuring tape and scissors

Techniques used
Casting on — an Italian tubular cast-on if you like it — knitting and purling both in the round and flat, and binding off. Increases to the left. A texture pattern worked from a chart.

Difficulty
1–2 of 5. The simplest of the three Duggari accessories, and a good place to start if the stitch is new to you.
