Dulcinea is a fictional character in the novel, Don Quixote, written by Miguel de Cervantes. She is the unseen ‘lady love’ and is described by him in the following excerpt: “…her name is Dulcinea, her country is El Toboso, a village of La Mancha, her rank must be at least that of a princess, since she is my queen and lady, and her beauty superhuman, since all the impossible and fanciful attributes of beauty which the poets apply to their ladies are verified in her; for her hairs are gold, her forehead Elysian Fields, her eyebrows rainbows, her eyes suns, her cheeks roses, her lips coral, her teeth pearls, her neck alabaster, her bosom marble, her hands ivory, her fairness snow, and what modesty conceals from sight such, I think and imagine, as rational reflection can only extol, not compare.“ Volume 1/Chapter XIII

Roughly translated from Spanish of the time the novel was written, Dulcinea means an overly elegant sweetness or unrequited love. I wanted to capture this feeling of elegant sweetness in the sweater design, so I added a soft romantic lace pattern to the sleeves.

I fell in love with this story when I was required to read it in its native language and write a report for my Spanish class. I really enjoyed all the adventures of this often misguided middle-aged gentleman from the region of La Mancha in central Spain. The character, Don Quixote, was obsessed with chivalrous ideals that were in the books that he read, so he decided to take up his lance and sword and begin his own chivalrous journey. His story includes a companion named Sancho Panza, and an imaginary lady named Dulcinea (who is actually a neighbor girl with no actual feeling of love for Don Quixote).
