This is a cowl that was inspired in part by Hundertwasser’s art and architecture, hence the title Dunklebunt, which is a name that Hundertwasser gave himself and that means “darkly multicolored.”

Dunkelbunt was knit with Cascade Eco in the main, and I used bits and pieces of colorful worsted-weight wool from my stash for the little windows of colour.

This is an easy project to knit and it is worked flat and then seamed, so it is suitable for beginners who are interested in learning a new kind of stitch (mosaic/slip stitch), but who don’t want to knit in the round. It’s also great for more experienced knitters who want a project they don’t have to pay much attention to. This project results in a very warm, cozy, and double-thick cowl with no wrong side.

Yarn: Main colour -- Cascade Eco+, 1 skein in charcoal grey (col. 8400) (250g, 478 yds/437 m). Contrasting colours -- 50 pieces of worsted weight yarn, each approx. 120” long.

Needle Size: 5.5 mm needles
