The Earth and Sea shawl is a lightweight shawl that can be knitted from one or more skein(s) of sports weight yarn. The instructions are modular enough to allow for knitting of individual shawls in different sizes and in multiple colors. Needle size and stitch gauge play a minor role. For this reason, the shawl is also suitable for beginners who like to experiment. Necessary knowledge is knit and purl stitches, slipping and knitting together stitches, and the yarn over.

This triangle shawl is knitted asymmetrical in rows starting at the narrow tip. The shawl consists of alternating patterns. Even though the sample shawls specify a certain number of sections, the shawl can be customized by repeating the patterns more often or less. The instructions are therefore structured such that first the patterns are described independently of the shawl construction. Then the shawl constructions for the two samples are described including the cast on and the bind-off methods.

The small example shawl is knitted from one skein of variegated yarn in sport weight with a length of 310 m. The larger example is knitted using two skeins of sports weight yarn in solid colors to show some color variations.
