Earthbound Socks
This pattern includes a pair of thick socks constructed with classic techniques and a classic cabled structure. This cable structure is used in many different designs, and I wanted to make a pair of socks using this beautiful structure. I chose the thickest sock yarn I could find in my stash, but the socks can be made smaller by choosing a slightly thinner sock yarn. Structures that require a certain number of stitches to be symmetrical are somewhat challenging to adjust in size when there are as few stitches as socks. If you go up half a needle size, they will be a little larger, and if you choose a lace yarn together with the recommended yarn and go up half or a whole needle size, they will be even larger. The structure consists of ribbing in both sides, so they have good flexibility even though there are cables on both the front and back. The socks are perfect indoor socks for the colder winter days that we all know are coming.
Very important pattern information -this pattern is not written by a big business or a professional writer. It is written with my own words driven by a passion for knitting, crafting and writing. If you have any questions, please just ask. I check my messages and emails several times every week.
Techniques used in the pattern:
Old Norwegian cast on/ German Twisted cast on
Left and right 2/2 cables
Decrease left and right
Increase left knit and purl stitch
Slip stitch heel
Kitchener stitch
Sizing socks knitted in a structure that requires a specific amount of stitches to be symmetrical can be difficult. This sock is made in an aran sock yarn. If you want the sock to be smaller in width use a DK sock yarn instead. If you want it to be a bit bigger go up half a needle size. If you want to add stitches it either has to be 4 stitches in each side in the ribbing, 8 in total, or 8 stitches in the cables, 16 in total. The same if you want to reduce stitches, and this affects the size on a sock a lot. In length the sock is knitted in cm/inches.
I hope this pattern will spark some joy for the upcoming colder seasons where thick socks are very useful. Since I now have a varied selection of patterns in my shop, I have added a 25% discount when you have 4 or more patterns in your chart. There’s no code needed, but it only activates when it’s 4 or more patterns in the chart.
