This is a very easy pattern, suited for beginners as well as more experienced knitters alike.

This pattern has been written with the absolute beginner in mind – I was asked to teach a knitting playgroup class at my local Early Years Centre, and was looking for an easy pattern that would incorporate all the basics so attendees could move on to other patterns at the end. A friend suggested a bib, which seemed perfect as all present would have a small child!

This pattern offers two version of the same bib: an easy (garter stitch) version (in pink), and an advanced beginner (stockinette stitch) version (in white). The main differences between both are that the stockinette stitch version incorporates purling rows, and requires some finishing, i.e. a single crochet border around and simple blocking at the end. This is not exceedingly difficult, and one may choose to start with that version first. As garter stitch does not curl, and has neat row edges, those finishing techniques not required for that version.

  • Skill Level: Beginner
  • Sizes: One Size Fits All
  • Skills & Notions required: Garter St (pink version only); Stockinette St (white version only); Simple decreases (k2tog, ssk) and increases (make 1, kf&b); Single Crochet border; Rejoining yarn; Sewing on a snap button or Velcro; Tapestry needle
