A step-by-step recipe for knitting felted slippers - flat & with chunky yarn. The pattern comes with 4 different size suggestions. Since felting depends a lot on yarn & washing machine, detailed instructions are available for calculating your own size.

Detailed video tutorial available

Included in the pattern:

  • pdf with altogether 12 pages
  • very detailed step-by-step written instructions
  • tons of pictures and helpful tips
  • video tutorials for all knitting techniques are available (on my blog)

Difficulty: beginner
This pattern was designed with beginners in mind. While it might not be an ideal first project, it’s certainly perfectly suitable for all those for want to venture into fitted garment knitting.

Important: There are row-by-row instructions for the sample size (M; foot length ~25cm). However, this still should be seen as a recipe. Felting is very difficult to predict. You may knit with a different gauge, use a different yarn, and use a different washing machine.

As a result, you will have to do some calculations. The video instructions and the detailed step-by-step examples in the pattern will guide you through this little bit of math.

Yarn and yardage:
The sample is knit with sheep wool felting yarn (single ply; 50g = 50m). For shoe sizes below 41 (EU) or ~8 (US), 150 grams are enough. If you want to knit them in two colors, you will probably still need two 50g skeins of each color.
The instructions tell you exactly how to determine your cast-on requirements in case you are using a different yarn, you can finish these slippers with any other yarn.

Note: No traditional gauge is supplied because you cannot count stitches on a felted swatch anymore. A swatch in stockinette stitch (20st x 20r) resulted in a felted piece that measures 12.5 x 9.3 cm (4.9 in x 3.7 in)

Skills required:
knit, purl, KFB, k2tog, SSK, p2tog, SSP, and a simple short row technique (like German short rows or Wrap & Turn)

Additional Materials:

  • Circular needles (40cm/16” cable or bigger) or straight needles
  • tapestry needle
  • Tape measure
  • Scissors
  • 2 stitch markers

Errata:
Row 35 on page 10 should read:
Row 35: knit across to marker, sm, k12, sm, SSK (59 stitches)
