This water balloon pattern has a circumference of around 6inches, 15-16cm and is around 4inches, 9-10cm, long.

I used Bernat Baby Blanket yarn purely as I had some leftover and it was both machine washable and tumble dryable. In theory, I suppose you can use any yarn but as they are going to be thrown around outside by the kids I highly recommend using yarn that can be easily washed and dried. These work great without felting but if you decide to try it please let me know how you get on!

If you want to make the water balloons bigger you can increase the number of stitches you cast on by in even numbers and use this pattern as more of a recipe. I would personally recommend that if you are increasing the cast on stitches you also increase the number of rows, using the higher number of rows to also increase the number of increase stitches in a round, ensuring you always increase at the beginning and end of every repeat (4 stitches each round) to keep the balloon shape. Always ensure that at least the last 3 rounds are knitted and are the same number of stitches you cast on by to create the ‘balloon neck’ shape and keep it proportional to the rest of the balloon.

Have fun, please share your photos and let me know the different yarns you’ve been able to use for these fun toys.
