I created this pattern for instructional purposes. I was teaching a 5 hour knitting module in a fashion design class for young adults and needed an easy, useful project that would be able to be completed within the time allotted.

I used a knitted cast-on so that by the time they’d cast on the required stitches, they have experienced the basics of the knit stitch.

Since then, I have used this project to teach elementary school children and adults on a cruise ship. I have determined that the long-tail cast-on is easier to master and will yield more success getting the stitches on the needle.

The garter stitch fabric is ‘squishy’ enough to protect the cell phone (or camera, iPod Touch, etc.) and will stretch to accommodate most sizes of devices.

Additional materials needed are a 1” button and a darning needle to sew up the sides and attach the button.
