The cable detail brings a touch of timeless style, while the ribbed side panels and buttoned slits, worked in double knitting, give it a contemporary feel. There’s no need to fear them; for me, the most rewarding projects are the ones where I push my boundaries and master new techniques. A vest is smaller than a full sweater, so it never feels like an overwhelming hurdle. And as a vest is incredibly versatile, the extra effort is absolutely worth it.
If your skills aren’t quite ready for the slits yet, you can easily simplify the project by omitting them and knitting the vest in the round all the way down to the hem. This variation also doubles as a perfect summer top — just grab a lighter yarn and smaller needles, and go for it!

The slipover is designed with 10–20 cm / 4–8” of positive ease at the bust, meaning the fit is intentionally relaxed. Measure your own bust circumference, add 10–20 cm / 4–8” and find the closest size in the size chart. You can also measure a favorite slipover you already own and find the matching size.

Needles

Long circular needle for the body.

Notions

GAUGE

20 sts x 23 rows = 10 cm / 4” in cable pattern with 4 mm (US 6) needle.
One pattern repeat: 24 sts x 36 rows = 12 cm x 15.5 cm / 4.75” x 6.25”.

CONSTRUCTION

The slipover is worked seamlessly from the top down. First, the back piece is worked flat from the neckline to the underarms. Stitches for the front pieces are picked up from the shoulder seams and worked down to the underarms, where the work is joined in the round. Before reaching the hem, the work is divided into front and back pieces again for the side slits and worked flat to the hem. The side slits feature double-knitted bands, and the neckline and armholes are finished in ribbing.
