Inspired by Tolkien’s Silmarillion, this scarf remembers Telperion as the Eldest of Trees along with its sibling, Laurelin. Using lace and cables to evoke the intermingling of the light emitted from these most beloved trees, the scarf is worked flat in two identical pieces and joined at the center.

Recommended yarn:
490 (525, 560, 590) yds / 450 (480, 510, 540) m of DK weight yarn with good stitch definition for cables and lace. Avoid colorways with high value contrast in variegation, as it will obscure the pattern.

Gauge is taken from finished chart B measurements and averaged. Adding length may require roughly 30 yards more for every four inches / 10 cm.

A video is included in my YouTube channel (link in pattern and here) for working the Russian grafting technique used for the join.

Yarn and colorways used in samples:

  • Knittinbro DK Tweed - 3 hanks recommended; sample worked in smallest size using exactly 2 hanks, in Ice Cold (light) and Enchanted Waters (dark)

  • Jill Draper Makes Stuff Mohonk - 2 hanks, worked in colorway Peridot.
