This great technique I learned in 1996 from the late Edna Mower. Here we have used our Elegant and Easy worsted weight mitten pattern and adapted it to accommodate the fleece. Pencil roving is stranded on the inside behind the knit fabric and “caught” every other stitch. This produces a very warm, fairly airtight mitten. The pencil roving, although not knit into the fabric, will show through on the front, giving a great hand knit appearance. While the bulk on the inside is minimal, the resulting fabric is rather inelastic, requiring the finished measurements to be slightly larger than standard knit mittens.

SKILLS USED: Basics, knitting in the round, simple shaping, stranding.

SIZES: Child small 4-6 years, (Child large or adult small / adult medium / adult large).

FINISHED CIRCUMFERENCE: 7” ( 8” / 9” / 10”)

MATERIALS NEEDED: approximately 80 (120 / 160 / 200) yards worsted weight wool yarn, 1 oz. pencil roving, US#4 (3.5 mm) double pointed needles or size to obtain the correct gauge, a small stitch holder, 2 markers, darning needle.
