I admired a crocheted sweater like this—multi-coloured, floral sleeves attached to a plain, one colour body. But because I prefer the drape of knitting, I chose to re-create the crocheted sleeves attached to a knit front and back. The stitch pattern used in the knitting is meant to reference the hexagon shape of the crocheted motifs.

Because crochet is denser, the crochet is worked in fingering yarns. But the knit pieces—including the garter stitch ‘fillers’ to square off the hexagons—are worked in a light worsted. You want to match your knitting yarn to the colour used for the final rounds of the crocheted hexagons: I have found that neutrals (off-white, oatmeal, charcoal gray) make the coordination between yarns easily managed. And as you can see in the dark mustard version, an exact match is not necessary. (In that version the final crochet round is darker.)

The marriage of knit + crochet is lovely—where each skill shows off what it does best—and neither is particularly challenging in this piece. The knitting stitch pattern is easily-memorized, and I have always found crocheted motifs easier than large, flat pieces. I hope your experience is the same!

PS Eliana is my daughter-in-law, shown in one of the photos here with her daughter and wearing their versions of this sweater. These were made quite a while ago, at each of their request. But then Eliana began vigorously encouraging me to publish the pattern, because she had requests for the pattern every time she wore it.

XS–S (M–L, 1X, 2X–3X) / 28–34 (36–42, 44–46, 48–54)
Finished circumference 43½ (49, 54½, 59½)” (110 124.5, 138, 151cm)
This is a generous sweater. Ease for each size is as follows: 9½–15½ (7–13, 8½–10½, 5½–11½)” (24–39.5 18–33, 21.5–26.5, 14–30)cm.
If you prefer less ease, you could make a smaller size.
