“Most people have an obsession; mine is knitting.”
--Elizabeth Zimmermann, Knitting Without Tears

No knitter can help but feel inspired to take charge of their knitting, after reading the books of Elizabeth Zimmermann. Her wise and resounding encouragement to knit as one wishes has freed several generations of knitters to knit their own path. In this spirit, Elizabeth Z. is an easily customized scarf worked in a different direction than usual. It is knit in the round, then cut open. The horizontal motifs form vertical “stripes” when the scarf is cut, and the delicate leaf pattern has lace stitches worked on every row, perfect for circular knitting. Both the width and length of the final scarf are easily adjusted by adding more vertical or horizontal stitches, respectively. The orange sample is a wider version with additional leaf motifs added (see Note for specific instructions).

Skill level: Easy to intermediate. Both charted and written instructions are provided.
