This cozy unisex beanie has features that make it extra warm for a cold winter day: a deep ribbed brim that can be doubled to keep the hat snug around the ears and a band of stranded colorwork for an extra layer. The stranded colorwork motif (charted only) is easy for a beginner, with no long floats, and requires only a small amount of the contrast color, making it perfect for leftovers or mini skeins.

To knit this hat, you need to know how to:

  • work in the round, using both knit and purl;
  • work stranded colorwork from a chart; and
  • work basic decreases (k2tog).

The yarn used in the sample shown in the pattern comes from the Ross Farm, a century farm in Western Pennsylvania that specializes in raising heritage and rare breed sheep. All the yarns sold by the Ross Farm are naturally colored and breed specific, and the names on the yarn are the names of the sheep who supplied the fleece for each skein. The yarns are minimally processed, so they still tend to contain a bit of lanolin in them. This means that your hands will get soft as you knit with the yarn, and you may find that your knit fabric blooms nicely the first time it is washed and the excess lanolin is removed. I find that the farm’s Shetland Sport is on the heavier end of sport weight, so if you are substituting yarn, you may find that a like DK weight will work just as well.
