The embossed appearance is created simply by knitting in the stitch below on some of the stitches. It is simple to memorize and adjust to your preferences. This pattern could very easily be adapted to any yarn weight.

The sample was knit across 45 stitches on fingering weight yarn and knit to a length of 5.25 feet. I recommend 30 to 35 stitches on worsted weight or 35 to 41 stitches on sport weight.
