Emmeline Persists starts as a simple triangle and then flares out to create winged tips. The smooth stocking stitch of the top of the shawl highlights the complex lace which follows.

Emmeline’s lace is unconventional and closely fitted to the non-traditional shape. This shawl is fascinating to knit and the end result is striking and just a bit dramatic.

The pattern is fully charted and also has line-by-line written instructions.

Emmeline Persists will look fabulous in tonal or solid colourways. Because the lace is detailed, variegated yarns with strong contrast between colours won’t show off the details well.

The shawl uses more than 100 grams of a typical fingering weight yarn. Many skeins are generously wound and weigh more than 100 grams, and the prototype shawl was made using one of these overweight skeins. There are opportunities to cast off early in the last few rows of the pattern if there is not quite enough yarn available.

The shawl’s lace is based on the Resist and Persist stitch patterns created by Naomi Parkhurst gannet on Ravelry. It is named for Emmeline Pankhurst, and I thank her very much for persisting.

The stitches used include single and double yarnovers, single and double decreases. There are some single twists which can be worked with a cable needle or without. Wrong side rows are purled, with the exception of the double yarnovers.

This pattern has been tested by the wonderful Carmen73, katisha, nevolik, SquirrelPrincess, Rihmanori, Canberra and yarna.
