Emmen DK Hat & Scarf
With most of my hand-knit garment patterns, I like to include an accessory in the same stitch technique. There are a few reasons for this – the first is simply because I enjoy the rhythm of the stitch and want to design an accessory which gives that immediate knitting satisfaction. The second is for knitters who are new to the technique, so they can build confidence by trying it out on a smaller project before tackling a full garment.
This stitch technique is one of my favourites, and I’ve used it in the Emmen Tank Top as well as the classic Emmen Jumper. If you’re familiar with those patterns, you’ll already know how fun and easy this stitch is to knit. It might look complicated, but it’s actually super simple!
The Emmen DK Hat and Scarf are perfect to knit and wear alongside the Emmen Tank Top, as they all use the same yarn weight. But if you prefer aran yarn, there’s also the original Emmen Hat, which pairs beautifully with the Emmen Jumper. I designed the aran versions first, then followed with the DK versions after knitters requested them – because when a stitch is this enjoyable, it’s lovely to have options!
CONSTRUCTION
The hat is knitted flat in one piece from the bottom up with one seam. The scarf is knitted from the bottom up in one piece.
TECHNIQUES USED
Cast on, knit, purl, decreasing, slip stitch technique sometimes called mosaic colour work. Joining one seam. Optional but recommended to create the feeling of joy when joining your pieces: mattress stitch.
YARN
For the hat: One 100g hank of Donegal Twists DK in shade A and shade B.
For the scarf: One 100g hank of Donegal Twists DK in shade A and shade B.
72% merino wool & 28% British wool, 270m/8295yds per 100g
SUGGESTED NEEDLES
4mm
GAUGE (tension)
24 stitches and 46 rows to 10cm square over dotty garter stitch pattern. I obtained this gauge with 4mm needles. It is important to obtain gauge so do swatch and change your needle size to achieve the correct gauge if you need to.
SIZE & FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
For the hat: to fit adult head
For the hat: due to the nature of the rib pattern & individual gauges the finished circumference can vary from 51cm to 62cm. The average finished circumference will be approx. 56cm.
For the scarf: approx. 18cm x 84cm.
