I love the shape of this cowl because it keeps all the warmth in by tapering in slightly towards the top. No loose edge to let the cold in! It also sits nicely on the shoulders with the generous ribbing on the bottom. Since it is made with Faire Isle stranded color work, the fabric is nice and thick and warm!

This cowl is designed to include a secret message in the Elvish Runes language created by JRR Tolkien in his famous “Lord of the Rings” book series. If you are a die-hard Tolkien fan, you can probably translate it without any guidance. But for those who would like a little help, you can find the translation on the last page of this PDF pattern. The cowl is knit in the round, from bottom to top, starting with the bottom ribbing. Once the bottom ribbing is finished, you can follow the charts provided in the order given. Complete written instructions are also given for your convenience. Once all charts are completed, the top ribbing is worked. A stretchy bind off is recommended.
