In the early decades of the twentieth century, as women throughout Great Britain began to demand their rights to vote, own property, and engage in commerce at the same level as men, their clothing became looser and less restrictive. One of the strong fashion silhouettes of the mid- 1910s to 1920s was the kimono. An interest in Orientalism fueled excitement about a simple garment that was shaped in a radically different way from the gure conscious Belle Epoch garments of the 1870s to 1910s. This kimono features a repeating grid pattern along the hem, cuffs, and front with a sinuous embroidered motif of vines and pansies. Worked in cream with touches of color, the garment allows the mother-of-the-bride to shine (but not so brightly as to surpass her daughter!).
