Enigmatic Socks
Traditional colorwork patterns are amazing but sometimes a knitter wants a pattern that is a little bit off the beaten path. Something that looks different. Something that challenges and makes you wonder if there is even a repeat lurking in the pattern at all — or is it just random chaos? And, also, wouldn’t it be nice to try out a different kind of heel?
Well, here are the socks for when all of those traditional colorwork motifs are just not hitting. This is another design in my ongoing series of non-horizontal repeat socks. There is actually a repeat but it takes a whopping 72 rows to complete and start over. The eye just can’t take that much area in so these socks appear to be more random in design than they actually are.
So as not to break the visual continuity of the meandering lines, I’ve include a double wedge heel (also called a diamond heel) with some matching stripes. The heel turn is worked flat but the rest of the heel is integral so there is no picking up of stitches along a heel flap.
These sock are worked top down with the integrated double wedge heel and a standard wide toe. All colorwork patterns (Main Pattern and 3 heel patterns) are all given as charts only. This pattern is appropriate for intermediate or advanced knitters with some experience with stranded colorwork knitting and basic sock construction.
Yarn suggestions: solid colors with a good contrast to each other are recommended. If you choose a variegated yarn for one (or both) color(s), I suggest you choose colors that still have a strong contrast and perhaps have a long color gradient rather than short blotches of color.
Finished size: Ladies (M) L/XL. The pictured socks are modeled by my daughter-in-law who has US size 10 feet (EU size 41). Measurements after blocking (but without additional stretching): bottom of heel to cuff (height of sock): 14”/ 36 cm, length of foot from back of foot/heel to tip of toe: 9.5“/ 24 cm, circumference of leg and foot: 8”/ 20 cm, circumference of heel + ankle at the widest point: 11”/ 28 cm.
