Pattern description from Knitting in America: “As an outgrowth of the entrelac socks, Kathryn started making Christmas stockings to sell during the holidays. This one, made with a sportweight handspun blend of wool and silk, features three-dimensional entrelac peaks, a technique that Kathryn devised herself and uses a lot in her sculptural work. Following a handknit Christmas stocking style initiated by her mother, the foot on each stocking is intentionally misshapen (on this one, the heel is out of proportion to the foot). Any hand- or machine-spun yarn can be used for this pattern, since the size of the finished stocking is not crucial. Kathryn used size 1 needles for the entrelac leg and sizes 2 and 3 for the cuff and foot. The pattern for the Entrelac Christmas Sock appears on page 205.”

Measurements:

• Leg 13” long from cuff to turning point of heel, 13” around at cuff
• Foot: 6” long (after heel shaping).

Materials:

• Sportweight wool in seven shades of green, one shade of red, and one shade of gold, approx 30 yards of each color. It takes about 12 yards of one color to knit twelve 6-st rectangles
• One set (5) dpn sizes 1, 2, and 3 or size needed to obtain gauge

Gauge: “Since the sock will not be worn, the gauge is not critical. The gauge on the sock in the photograph is 7 sts and 8 rows to 1” over cuff pat using size 3 needles. Heavier yarn and larger needles will make a bigger sock; smaller yarn and smaller needles will make a smaller sock.”
